Mazzaro’s Italian Market St Pete: A Picnic Run by Cart

Mazzaro's Italian Market has 27 numbered sandwiches on its menu, and number 13 only exists on Fridays. That is the kind of detail you only learn by going, and it is a good reason to go. Mazzaro's Italian Market is a family-run market on 22nd Avenue North that started as a coffee roasting business, and it has since grown into a cheese room, a wine room, a bakery, a fresh pasta counter and a deli with a covered patio.

It is not downtown, which is the point. This is the stop you add to a downtown day when you want lunch to be better than the usual options. Here is how to use it.

When to go, and when not to

The hours are tight, so plan around them. Mazzaro's is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm and Saturday from 9am to 2:30pm. It is closed Sundays, and it also closes on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. If your plan is a Sunday waterfront picnic, buy on Saturday.

The market is at 2909 22nd Avenue North, a few miles north and west of the Central Avenue core. Our carts are street legal wherever the posted speed limit is 35 mph or lower, so check the posted limit on any road before you commit to it, and have the cart delivered to the market's neighborhood if the route looks wrong.

The free wine tasting

Mazzaro's pours free wine tastings on Fridays from noon to 3pm and on Saturdays from 11am to 2pm. The selection rotates, so it is a different pour each week. A tasting and a cart are an easy combination to get wrong, so keep it to a taste, make sure whoever drives the cart skips it, and buy a bottle for later.

What to order

The sandwich menu is long, and a few are worth singling out. Prices below are as printed on the menu the market posted in November 2025, so confirm them when you order.

  • #5 Mortadella Pistachio ($10). Shaved mortadella with pistachio spread, burrata, parmigiano, arugula and lemon oil on a ciabatta roll. The menu flags nuts.

  • #27 Fig & Pig ($10). Prosciutto cotto, speck, hot soppressata, fresh mozzarella, fig jam and arugula on crusty Italian bread.

  • #2 Muffaletta ($9). Ham, mortadella, salami and olives, dressed with provolone, Italian slaw, onion, roasted red peppers, tomato, romaine and oil and vinegar on a half loaf of the market's oven bread.

  • #13 Sammy's Big Fish ($9, Fridays only). The one that only exists on Fridays, with tomatoes, romaine, onion, provolone and a choice of lemon basil remoulade or Caribbean sauce.

  • Breakfast sandwiches ($5.99). Served until 11am, if you are starting the day here.

The soup of the day and the panini and sandwich of the day change, and the market asks you to call or check its Facebook page to see what they are. You can also order ahead at (727) 321-2400 or online, which matters on a Saturday when the doors close at 2:30.

Beyond the sandwich counter

The cheese department lists more than 300 varieties, and the cheesemongers will offer samples. The wine room has thousands of bottles. The bakery turns out Crusty Italian, Semolina, Ciabatta, Focaccia, Sfogliatelle, Cannoli and Eclairs, and there is a coffee bar that roasts its beans daily. A fresh pasta department sits next to the deli with house-made pasta and sauces, which is useful if your rental has a kitchen.

If you eat in, the covered patio is the nicer choice, and the market has beer available through its on-premise license.

Build the picnic, then take it to the water

This is where the golf cart earns its place. Order ahead, pick up a loaf of focaccia and a wedge of something from the cheese room, and carry it back toward the waterfront. Vinoy Park, North Straub Park and the Pier lawn are all easy to reach from downtown, and our guide to the waterfront and downtown stops has more ideas for where to spread out.

Our six passenger golf cart rental is $99 for eight hours or per consecutive day, with free delivery within a 10-mile radius. That makes a market run a reasonable add-on instead of a separate trip.
